This Texas Heat Has Been Tough on
Our Local Farmers and Ranchers

The heat has been detrimental to our local farmers in Southwest Texas in a number of ways. It has caused crops to wilt and die, making it difficult for farmers to get a good harvest. It has also made it difficult for farmers to work in the fields, as they are at risk of heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses. Additionally, the heat has caused livestock to become stressed and dehydrated, which can lead to death. In some cases, the heat has even caused entire farms to be abandoned.

Here are some specific examples of how the heat has affected farmers in Houston:
  • Corn crops have been particularly hard hit by the heat, with some farmers reporting losses of up to 50%.
  • Cotton crops have also been damaged by the heat, with some farmers reporting that their yields are down by 20%.
  • Livestock have been struggling to cope with the heat, with some farmers reporting that they have lost up to 10% of their animals.
  • Farmers have had to spend more money on irrigation and cooling systems in order to keep their crops and livestock alive.
  • Some farmers have had to abandon their farms altogether due to the heat.
The heat is a serious problem for our farmers in Houston, and it is likely to continue to be a problem in the future. Farmers are adapting to the heat by planting heat-tolerant crops, using irrigation, and investing in cooling systems. However, the heat is a major challenge for the agricultural industry in Houston and our surrounding areas, and it is one that farmers will continue to face in the years to come.
